Historical society to host annual Old Timers Gathering
TWENTYNINE PALMS — Fifty years after the first Old Timers Gathering was held at the home of pioneers Bill and Prudie Underhill, their daughter, Ann Congdon, will be one of the guests of honor when the Twentynine Palms Historical Society hosts the 2018 gathering from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Old Schoolhouse Museum here.
Congdon, who grew up in Twentynine Palms, is 2018 Pioneer Days grand marshal. She will be joined by fellow honorees, Military Grand Marshal Kim Ortamond and historical society Old Timer of the Year Don Bolster.
The Underhills, who hosted the gathering from 1968 to 1982, called it “an old-fashioned hand-shaking, back-slapping get-together to reminisce about homesteading and road-building days.”
The historical society took over the event in 1982. Today, the gathering is an opportunity for anyone interested in the history of Twentynine Palms to meet some of the community’s earlier residents, and to share their memories and stories of life here with others.
In addition to the traditional cake-cutting by the honorees, this year’s gathering will feature a demonstration by the First Class Miners, a nonprofit dedicated to educating others in the basic skills and the equipment used in placer gold prospecting and mining.
The museum is at 6760 National Park Drive, Twentynine Palms. Admission to the gathering is free, but donations are accepted. For more information on the society, its projects and programs, go online to www.29palmshistorical.com.
