Theater 29 will kick of the 2019 “Best Of” season with John Patrick’s comedy “A Bad Year For Tomatoes”, first produced at Theatre 29 in 2009.

Myra Marlowe, a famed TV actress retreats from the pressures of her life in Hollywood to a quiet village, Beaver Haven, in New England. For the next 12 months she plans to take it easy, write her autobiography and grow tomatoes.  While she is successful in fending off her agent’s attempts to lure her back to Hollywood, she is unsuccessful in fending off the locals. They interfere and annoy her constantly and so in a desperate bid to keep them at bay she invents a maniacal sister locked upstairs who is likely to escape unpredictably. This ruse works a treat until the locals decide to step in and help this poor lost soul.

Char Childs, in her adult production debut as Director, knows a good farcical comedy when she sees it. She also enjoys the fact that this play has wonderfully eccentric characters, especially for women of various ages.

Auditions will be held at 5:00 pm, Sunday, November 18, 2018 at Theatre 29, 73637 Sullivan Road in Twentynine Palms. Rehearsal are weekday evenings from November 19 - January 10, 2019. “A Bad Year for Tomatoes” will run weekends from January 11. 2019 through January 27, 2019 with Friday and Saturday night performances at 7:00 pm and Sunday matinees at 2:30 pm.

Director Childs will be looking for a cast of 3 men and 4 women:

Myra Marlowe … She is a successful actress and decides to come to New England to write her autobiography. Although the neighbors don’t know who she is, they are constantly interrupting her so she invents a mad sister. She also plays her mad sister whom she invents to scare off her nosy neighbors. Age: approximately in her forties

Tom Lamont … Myra’s agent, he is quite fond of Myra. He isn’t sure that this was a good plan for Myra to drop out and write her autobiography.

Cora Gump … Just likes to gossip. Local girl from Beaver Haven. Very much like Reba.

Reba Harper … Local gossip like Cora. Not up to date on anything outside of the Hamlet of Beaver Haven.

Piney … Very blunt kind of a hick, unusual character.

Willa Mae Wilcox …  Local witch reads palms, fortune telling and the like.

Sheriff … Sherlock to the rescue.

Please Note:
1.    Auditions are open auditions, no appointment necessary.
2.    Auditions are cold read. No prepared monologues required.
