Director Katie Fleischman has cast “The Glass Menagerie” at Theatre 29. The classic drama focuses on the Wingfield family, a mother and her children abandoned by their father.
“The Glass Menagerie” is a memory play by Tennessee Williams that premiered in 1944 and catapulted Williams from obscurity to fame. The play has strong autobiographical elements, featuring characters based on its author, his histrionic mother, and his mentally fragile sister Laura.
Amanda Wingfield, a proud woman clinging to memories of a refined past, will be played by Janet Peercy. Chris Fleischman will portray her son Tom Wingfield, who aspires to be a poet, but after his father’s disappearance supports the family by working in a shoe factory. His acquaintance, Jim O’Conner, will be played by Lyle Williams. He takes an interest in Tom’s sister, Laura Wingfield, played by Amy Fangmeyer. She’s socially awkward and has a lame leg as well as a crippling shyness. The play is in rehearsals now at Theatre 29.
“The Glass Menagerie” will run weekends at Theatre 29 from August 9 to 25. Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00 pm and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 pm. For tickets visit theatre29.org or call the box office at 760-361-4151.
