Twentynine Palms Historical Society Old Schoolhouse Museum 6760 National Park Drive, Twentynine Palms, CA 92277 (760) 367-2366 or Email: 29PalmsHistorical@gmail.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Photo captions at end of file Old signs exhibit opens at Old Schoolhouse Museum TWENTYNINE PALMS - Signage dates back to ancient times, when prehistoric peoples created petroglyphs and pictographs to impart messages to others. The Twentynine Palms Historical Society's newest exhibit at the Old Schoolhouse Museum, "Signs, Signs Everywhere a Sign," doesn't go back quite that far, but it does explore signs from throughout the community dating back to the 1940s. The exhibit curated by Dana Bowden features business, government and organizational signs, street signs and yardsticks used for advertising. There's even a sign erected by "the locals" on Sunrise Avenue as a joke after PBS personality Huell Howser purchased his home in Twentynine Palms in the late 1990s. Howser, who passed away in 2013, never let the pranksters forget the scare they caused him with the sign. Museum visitors who want that scoop can check out The Desert Trail newspaper clipping on the prank included in the exhibit. The exhibit will be on display through April 30 at the museum, 6760 National Park Drive in Twentynine Palms. Hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. For more information on the historical society, its projects and programs, go online to www.29palmshistorical.com or call (760) 367-2366.
