MEDIA RELEASE – June 3, 2019
CALL FOR ART: “Oh Those Summer Nights”
Artwork due Friday, June 28, 2019
Twentynine Palms Visitor Center & Art Gallery
“Oh Those Summer Nights” is the theme for the next Art in Public Places exhibition at Twentynine Palms Visitor Center & Art Gallery in downtown Twentynine Palms. The show will be on display from July 6 through September 27, 2019.
Desert artists are invited to submit an original piece of art for possible inclusion in the group exhibition. Artwork will be received at the visitor center on In/Out day, Friday, June 28, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Artists unable to make this time can request an alternate delivery time by calling (760)367-3445 any weekday prior to June 28.
The show theme focuses on the long, hot summer nights in the Mojave Desert and can be expressed in painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, mosaics, ceramics, assemblage, sculpture or other 2D and 3D work. All work must be ready to hang with professional wire or mount on a pedestal, must be offered for sale, and must be suitable for viewing by the general public. Outdoor art pieces also will be accepted and displayed in the visitor center’s walled patio area.
An opening reception for artists and the public is planned for Saturday, July 6, from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m., as part of Art Cruise 29! First Saturday, and will feature refreshments and music by Miri Hunter.
In addition to the exhibition at the visitor center, Art In Public Places spotlights one of the murals this summer—Mural #19, Good Times at Smith’s Ranch—painted by local artist Tim O’Connor in 2002. The mural can be seen on the south facing wall at 6296 Adobe Road. The mural celebrates the Smith family—Bill Smith who arrived in 1923, Thelma who became his wife in 1930, their six children, and their ice house, ice cream parlor, outdoor theater, recreation hall, water wells, showers and swimming pond that served desert homesteaders on hot summer days and nights.
Art in Public Places exhibitions are hosted by the Public Arts Advisory Committee (PAAC) of the City of Twentynine Palms. For questions, contact Jon Beard at (760) 367-7562 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Twentynine Palms Visitor Center is open daily at 73484 29 Palms Hwy. at the corner of Desert Queen Avenue in downtown Twentynine Palms, (760) 367-3445.
