7/16/2019

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  Joshua Tree Residential Education Experience (JTREE) announces their formal partnership with Joshua Tree National Park (JTNP).

On Monday, July 1, 2019, Lori Rennie, President of JTREE, and David Smith, Superintendent of Joshua Tree National Park, signed a General Agreement marking the beginning of their partnership to establish a youth-oriented residential outdoor education campus in Joshua Tree National Park. This education program will complement the Park’s current K-12 day-use curriculum-based education program.

Through this environmental education partnership, JTNP will capture the imagination of students and encourage them to become the ecological stewards of tomorrow.  These experiences will empower a diverse student body of young people to make a difference in society as well as build self-esteem, personal knowledge, and 21st-century skills such as communication, teamwork, and critical thinking. The residential education programming shall reflect the interdisciplinary nature of environmental education, and feature the interplay between science, technology, engineering, math, social and cultural sciences, and the humanities.

The education program shall be primarily established, funded, constructed and operated by and in collaboration with JTREE, a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization. JTREE’s Board of Directors includes Lori Rennie, President; Mark Butler, Vice-President; Phil Spinelli, Treasurer; Paula Dashiell, Secretary; with Stephanie Dashiell, Mike Congdon, and Jim Spee serving as Members-at-Large.

If you are interested in participating on this project with JTREE, please contact us at jtreeinpark@gmail.com.

Director Katie Fleischman has cast “The Glass Menagerie” at Theatre 29. The classic drama focuses on the Wingfield family, a mother and her children abandoned by their father.

“The Glass Menagerie” is a memory play by Tennessee Williams that premiered in 1944 and catapulted Williams from obscurity to fame. The play has strong autobiographical elements, featuring characters based on its author, his histrionic mother, and his mentally fragile sister Laura.

Amanda Wingfield, a proud woman clinging to memories of a refined past, will be played by Janet Peercy. Chris Fleischman will portray her son Tom Wingfield, who aspires to be a poet, but after his father’s disappearance supports the family by working in a shoe factory. His acquaintance, Jim O’Conner, will be played by Lyle Williams. He takes an interest in Tom’s sister, Laura Wingfield, played by Amy Fangmeyer. She’s socially awkward and has a lame leg as well as a crippling shyness. The play is in rehearsals now at Theatre 29.

“The Glass Menagerie” will run weekends at Theatre 29 from August 9 to 25.  Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00 pm and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 pm. For tickets visit theatre29.org or call the box office at 760-361-4151.

MOON MISSIONS AND LUNAR LEGENDS Two Programs Honor the Moon Through Science, Art, and Stories

7/9/2019

Sky’s The Limit Observatory and Nature Center continues the Full Moon Cultural Series with a pair of events on Saturday, July 20 celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Lunar Landing and the importance of the Moon in indigenous cultures.

At 6:30 pm in the Community Services Building at 74325 Joe Davis Drive, the celebration starts with “Going to the Moon: How Did We Get There?” as Artist Chuck Caplinger joins Astronomer Ray Yeager for a visual trip through the early days of the space program up to the Apollo 11 Moon Landing on July 20, 1969. In the 60’s, Chuck was Art Director of Space Concepts – contracted by NASA to illustrate scenarios of space exploration.  Chuck will read from his autobiography and display his illustrations.

At 8:30 pm on the Observatory stage at 9697 Utah Trail, the celebration continues with “La Luna Desvela: The Moon Reveals,” honoring Latino Conservation Week with a program in Spanish, English, and American Sign Language. Co-sponsored by the Wildlands Conservancy, Mojave Desert Land Trust, and Sky’s The Limit, the evening features Native American stories told by Blanca Villalobos, Whitewater Preserve’s Education Coordinator, and Pat Murkland, of the Dorothy Ramon Learning Center.

Art Basulto and Cindy Holland of MDLT will introduce live desert creatures and talk about conserving the land and wildlife. Amy Eden & Kerstin Isabella will provide ASL translation. The program will close with music in Spanish, English, and Latin American indigenous languages as the moon rises. Guests are encouraged to linger under the desert night sky.

An anonymous gift makes possible these Full Moon Programs, exploring how diverse cultures understand the significance of the desert, earth, and sky. The gatherings take place on Saturdays under the bright desert moon.
Guests are urged to dress for unpredictable desert weather and bring comfortable camp chairs and water. The campus will open at 7:30 pm to allow time to explore the setting. Parking is limited, so carpooling is encouraged. A suggested donation of $10 per vehicle will help sustain this series and support these nonprofit organizations.
There are no overnight stays and NO CAMPING anywhere on the Observatory and Nature Center property. No pets, no smoking or alcohol allowed, and visitors must carry out all trash. Adults must accompany and take responsibility for the safety and behavior of children under 16.

Desert weather is very unpredictable, and this event may have to be delayed or rescheduled due to rain or excessive wind. Scheduled rain date is Sunday, July 21. Check @skysthelmit29 or follow @STL29Palms to learn the latest status of the event.

Joshua Tree Library, in partnership with the Morongo Basin Cultural Arts Council and Friends of the Joshua Tree Library, features Joshua Tree artist Jillian Sandell

From July 13 to September 30, 2019, Joshua Tree Library will be exhibiting works by local artist Jillian Sandell. The exhibition is a partnership of the Morongo Basin Cultural Arts Council and Friends of the Joshua Tree Library, and features drawings and risograph prints inspired by desert plants and landscapes.

Jillian Sandell is an educator, writer, and artist who has lived in Joshua Tree since 2016. Using different mediums (including drawing, watercolor, risograph prints, and zines) her work transforms small details from everyday life and the natural environment into compositions and narratives that help illuminate their layered histories and meanings.

On Saturday September 28, from 3-4pm, there will be a reception featuring an artist talk. Jillian will talk about how she started drawing three years ago in the midst of a health crisis, and how those early rough sketches turned into an ongoing art practice that both responds to her immediate environment and informs how she experiences the world.
