The Palm Desert R/C Raceway & Hobby Shop will host the 14th Annual Toys for Tots Toy Drive & R/C Off-Road Race on Saturday, December 1st at the PDRC Track, located at 72440 Painters Path in Palm Desert, California – behind the Desert Crossing Shopping Center and next to the entrance to the “Bump-n-Grind Trail.”
The Toys for Tots Toy Drive & Race will bring the top R/C nitro off-road drivers from around the West Coast to the Coachella Valley. Practice for the race opens on Friday, November 30th from 12pm to 8pm. Then on Saturday, gates will open at 7am, presentation of the colors and national anthem at 8:30am, and racing begins promptly at 9am. Food and drinks will be available all-day during Saturday’s event. Locals are encouraged to come by to watch and cheer for their favorite R/C driver and team during practice and race days for free.
For 2018, the Toys for Tots Toy Drive & Race is in its 14th season and is the most popular radio-control nitro car and truck racing event in Southern California during the Christmas season. “We are so pleased to have Toys for Tots back at PDRC, we need all the support we can get this season with Toys-R-Us closing down, which was our biggest supporter and donor,” says retired USMC Gunnery Sergeant Luis and Debbie Solares, regional coordinators for USMCR Toys for Tots. The “R/C community” is very community oriented and is heavily involved in local events benefiting non-profit organizations that support local residents and military and public service personnel. The race features many different racing classes for the novice to the expert racer alike. Racing fee is $20 plus New Unwrapped Toy ($10 or More Value) and Military/Public Service with ID are FREE with New Unwrapped Toy.
“I am pleased to bring PDRC back to the community and provide Coachella Valley’s only true ‘grass roots’ R/C racing facility and hobby shop that’s top-notch and fun for all hobbyists and ages alike,” says Jon VanderMolen, new owner and operator of Palm Desert R/C Raceway & Hobby Shop since March 2018. Jon has been involved in the R/C community since the late 1980’s and is former partner and co-founder of Rise Up HobbyTown and former manager at Uncle Don’s Hobbies. The buzz on the streets from those who have visited the track and hobby shop say it’s the best facility they’ve seen since it opened in 2002.
PDRC began in 2002 and has been serving local and out of town radio-control off-road car and truck racers of all ages and skill levels alike. It has hosted many of the top race events, such as Best of the West, West Coast Shootout, JBRL Nitro Off-Road Series, and Grass Roots. The track and hobby shop is open to the public, Wednesday and Friday 5pm to 9pm, and Saturday and Sunday 12pm to 6pm. Local club racing will begin on Fridays, starting November 7, 2018. Practice costs $10 per person and racing costs $15 per person. R/C rentals are available on a first-come-first-serve basis and start at $20 per hour.
