Twentynine Palms is home to Joshua Tree National Park and the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center. We are known for our spectacular night sky at Sky's The Limit Observatory & Nature Center, our amazing public arts program (murals, sculptures, galleries), and rock climbing.
The City of Twentynine Palms is in the middle of the Mojave Desert between Los Angeles and the Colorado River. The city became incorporated on November 23, 1987, and encompasses 59 square miles (larger than the City of San Francisco) and has a population of more than 25,000. The City of Twentynine Palms dedicates itself to securing the quality of life through development and preservation.
About 5 miles from the main gate of the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) lay the main businesses of Twentynine Palms.
Another development that has started is Sky's the Limit Observatory & Nature Center. The center offers the Orrery, a representation of the solar system showing the orbits of the planets; an observatory, building/lecture hall, and amphitheater; and classrooms and research facilities.
Twentynine Palms is proud of its dark night sky where residents and visitors are still able to clearly see constellations and even planets. One of the best places in the world to go star-gazing is Joshua Tree National Park, which has its headquarters right in Twentynine Palms.
Joshua Tree National Park (JTNP) offers more than just star-gazing. Hiking, rock climbing, camping, mountain biking, wildflower viewing, bird watching, horseback riding, and nature walks are just some of the many activities one can do while visiting the area. Next to the park's visitor center is the Joshua Tree National Park Association Desert Institute. The Institute offers field courses (several for college credit), community lectures, and custom designed programs for adults.
Besides the park, there are various other activities to explore. The city is famous worldwide for its murals, including one created and painted by John Pugh. There is also the Old Schoolhouse Museum, the 29 Palms Art Gallery, Roadrunner Dunes Golf Course, Theatre 29, and much more.
Nearby in the village of Joshua Tree, is Copper Mountain College offering associates degrees in various fields. Copper Mountain College also has a great career center to aid the public and students alike in preparing for a career and finding a job in the area. Chapman University, a private institution with its main campus in Orange County, has a high desert campus on base.
Housing in Twentynine Palms is reasonable for families, large and small. Types of homes include large modern residences, custom homes, small subdivision dwellings, and apartment complexes.
