Twentynine Palms Chamber Seeking Public Input for Pioneer Days Button Art!
The Twentynine Palms Chamber of Commerce is looking to the public for the design for this year's Pioneer Days button! The button is a huge part of the annual celebrations, with the Judge and Sheriff for Saturday's parade being decided by the duo that sells the most buttons.
This year's theme is " Pioneers of the Future", submitted by employees of the Twentynine Palms branch of Pacific Western Bank.
All residents of Twentynine Palms and surrounding communities are encouraged to submit their ideas by email to 29chamber@29chamber.org, in person, or by fax (black and white only) to (760) 367-3366.
All submissions should be in the office by 12:00pm noon on Thursday, August 19th, 2010. The decision will be made by the Twentynine Palms Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors during their monthly meeting, and will be revealed at our Pioneer Days kickoff mixer, to be held on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 5:00pm, when buttons will be distributed to Judge and Sheriff candidates.

Pioneer Days Information and Forms Now Available!
The Twentynine Palms Chamber of Commerce would like to announce that information and applications for this year's 74th annual Pioneer Days celebration, to be held at Luckie Park October 14-17th, are now available.
All information and paperwork is available on our website, 29chamber.org. Simply follow the link on the left hand side of our home page. Information is also available by contacting the Twentynine Palms Chamber of Commerce by phone at (760) 367-3445, or by email at 29chamber@29chamber.org.
The Chamber is also looking for the public's input on potential Grand Marshals for this year's event. Please submit all ideas by phone or by email.
Also, please note that vendor spots, both for the celebration and the parade, scheduled for 10:00am on Saturday, October 16th, fill up quickly, so we are asking that those interested please get your paperwork in as soon as possible! The Chamber is working hard to provide our community with the best and most fun-filled celebration for everyone!

*City Council Candidates Announced*
The race has officially begun for three open seats on the five-member Twentynine Palms City Council. As of the filing deadline of 5 p.m. Wednesday, August 11, seven candidates had qualified by completing their filing requirements and were certified by City Clerk Char Sherwood to be placed on the November 2, 2010, election ballot.
Incumbent Councilman Jim Harris, currently the Mayor pro tem, will be seeking to hold his seat for a second term on the Council. Two additional vacant seats are those of Mayor Steve Flock, who has served one term on the council, and Councilman Steve Spear, who chose not to run for a third term.
The six candidates for Twentynine Palms City Council in addition to Harris are Planning Commissioner Carey Alderson, businessman Larry Briggs, small business owner Mark W. Clemons, planning consultant Jay Corbin, businessman and Planning Commissioner Daniel L. Mintz Sr., and engineering technician and General Plan Advisory Committee member Steven D. Whitten.
Winners of the November election will be installed on December 14, 2010. They will join seated councilmen John Cole and Joel Klink, whose current terms extend through 2012.

*The Desert Institute and the Twentynine Palms Historical Society Present Back to The Old Schoolhouse!*
The Old Schoolhouse Lecture Series announces its 2010 - 2011 season lineup. Featured are expert speakers on cultural history and natural science topics relating to Joshua Tree National Park and surrounding desert lands. Lectures are held at the Old Schoolhouse Museum, 6760 National Park Drive, Twentynine Palms, and begin at 7 p.m. Lectures are open to the public for a fee of $5.00 at the door.
Subscriptions to all ten lectures in the series are also available for only $40.00. For information and subscriptions, call the Desert Institute at 760-367-5535. There is an optional dinner at 29 Palms Inn starting at 5 pm with the speaker each second Friday, diners are responsible for their own meal. Morongo Basin Chapter of the Compassionate Friends Monthly Meeting for August HAS BEEN MOVED!

Due to an unforeseen conflict, this month's meeting of The Morongo Basin Chapter of The Compassionate Friends has been changed from Wednesday, August 11, 2010, to Wednesday, August 18, 2010, from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm at the office of Hospice of Morongo Basin in Joshua Tree. The address is 61675 - 29 Palms Hwy. This change is for this month only. The Compassionte Friends is a national support organization reaching out to parents who have experienced the death of a child. Come join us as we support each other in our grief journey and realize that "we need not walk alone". The Compassionate Friends reach out to each other with love, with understanding and with hope. *Auditions for Musical, "The First Christmas" at Theatre 29*

Theatre 29 and Directors Patricia Tabeling and Paulette Highfill have announced Auditions for their special traditional holiday season production of the musical, "The First Christmas", a Liken for the stage production.
"The First Christmas" features Lyrics and music by Aaron Edson and book by Dennis Agle Jr., and tells the story of young Amelia struggling with the concept of sharing her family's Christmas with a family in need. In the musical production, Amelia discovers the true meaning of Christmas through traditional Christmas stories. The play lets audiences young and old watch the Christmas story as they have never seen it before, through the imagination of a young girl. Featuring all original songs, this heart warming musical is perfect for families of all ages.
Auditions for "The First Christmas" will be held on Monday, September 20, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at Theatre 29, 73637 Sullivan Road in the city of Twentynine Palms.
Director Tabeling and Highfill are looking for actors and singers to fill the following roles: Three non-singing parts, Amelia (age 10-12), and Mr. and Mrs. Brown (ages 30s-40s).
Singing cast members roles are: five Shepherds, (ages 20s and up), Zacharias and Elisabeth (ages 50s and up), Gabriel (age 25 or older), Mary and Joseph (ages 18-25), and about 9 chorus members to play townspeople and the Heavenly Host (ages 18 and older).
All actors should come prepared for cold reading. For those auditioning for singing parts, please come prepared to perform a song with a CD with no vocals or a Karaoke tape. No live accompaniment will be available.
"The First Christmas" will run at 7:00 p.m. Fridays and Saturday for five weekends from November 19th through December 18th. A Thursday performance will be held at 7:00 p.m. December 7th and a Saturday matinee at 2:30 p.m. December 11th.
Tickets for "The First Christmas" are $12.00 for regular admission, $10.00 for seniors and military, and $8.00 for children under 12 and students with ID. Tickets and reservations are available through the Theater 29 Box Office at 760-361-4151, or online at www.theatre29.com .
