The Twentynine Palms Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce that we have begun the process of moving into our new office, located across the street from our current office, at 73484 Twentynine Palms Highway, in the heart of downtown Twentynine Palms.

We are so excited to be moving into this newly renovated building! Unfortunately, as we all know, moving can be quite the process. We are asking our members and the local community to please be patient with us over the next couple of weeks while we make our transition.

If you call our offices and no one is able to come to the phone, please leave a message, and one of us will be more than happy to get back to you. We do have access to our email, so if you have any questions or concerns, please contact either Rob (29chamber@29chamber.org) or Samantha (admin@29chamber.org).

We look forward to hearing from each and every one of you! Look for news on a grand opening of the new office, which will be coming soon!

*Census 2010 Deadline, Forms, and Phone Numbers for Help*

The City of Twentynine Palms reminds residents that April is the time to fill out and mail back their Census 2010 questionnaires. For communities such as Twentynine Palms, including the Wonder Valley and Desert Heights areas, obtaining an accurate population count is critical when it comes to getting a fair share of the more than $400 billion in federal funding allocated each year for projects like new roads, schools, and public health and safety services.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, "When you fill out and mail back your census form, you're making a statement about what resources your community needs going forward."

Local residents who have not received a census form in the mail at their residence are encouraged to pick up a Be Counted form, available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Russian, at one of three public locations in Twentynine Palms and mail it back in the attached postage-paid envelope. Forms are available Monday through Saturday at the Twentynine Palms Library, 6078 Adobe Road, Monday through Thursday at City Hall, 6136 Adobe Road, and Monday through Friday at the Senior Center, 6539 Adobe Road.

Residents can also give their answers over the phone or request a form to be sent to where they live by calling a toll-free Census Bureau number: English 1- 866-872-6868, Chinese 1-866-935-2010, Korean 1- 866-955-2010, Spanish 1-866-928-2010, Vietnamese 1-866-945-2010, TDD (Telephone Display Device for the hearing impaired) 1-866-783-2010.

The Census Bureau also advises that households that send in their forms after Friday, April 16, may still get visited by census workers when they begin going door-to-door to obtain census information in May. Those who have P.O. Boxes can expect a knock at their door anytime from May to July.

For questions or more information, contact census liaison Vickie Waite at City Hall, (760)367-6799, or visit www.2010.census.gov.

Signups for Street Fair and Car Show Soapbox Derby Race Have Begun!

The Armed Services YMCA is once again bringing back Soapbox Derby Races in connection with The Twentynine Palms Street Fair and Car Show on June 4, 2010 and we need the support of local businesses and residents. For a tax deductible donation of $125.00, the ASYMCA is requesting residents or town business owners to become patrons of the Soapbox Derby Kit (hardware, wheels, steering) for a child to build with a parent/adult. The car will be required to place the patron's logo or business name and is a great way to advertise! We had a big crowd last year and expect and even bigger participation this year. All funds raised are used for the children's programs at the ASYMCA and to support our various other programs that help active duty military and their families.

The race will be on Cactus drive in Twentynine Palms. A "Soapbox Car" is made from a ½ sheet of plywood and a kit that includes all major components. The $125.00 sponsor fee covers the cost of the car and all other costs of the Soapbox Derby. The car is to be built by a child, aided by a parent/adult. The race is held on a downhill slope so that the car is naturally pulled by gravity, and steered by the child driver. Age categories associated with the Soapbox Derby are 5-8 years and 9-14 years of age stock and Super-Stock for experienced racers. We still have many spots available for the children to sign up to be a part of this Soapbox Derby experience. For registration details contact: Marisa Reeder 760-830-7481 or email at ymca1@roadrunner.com.

*Actors Raise Funds at Copper Mountain College Foundation Golf Tourney*

The Copper Mountain College Foundation held its Annual Scramble Golf Tournament on April 17th at the Desert Winds Golf Course aboard the Marine Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) in Twentynine Palms. The 26th annual event hosted 99 golfers and raised about $7,000 for college programs and scholarships.

Championship team winners were, 1st Place: Bob Georgiadi, Val Georgiadi, Bill Hargus and Tommy Silva. 2nd Place: Gary Benedict, Ron Benedict, Alan Rasmussen and Todd Rassmussen. 3rd Place: Austin Grey, Cody Grey, Kerry Keyes and Adam Moats.

President's team winners were, 1st Place: Leroy Allen, Chris Anderson, John Redway, Danny Ogilvie. 2nd Place: Fred Bryant, Peggy Bryant, Connie Larson and Dennis Larson. 3rd Place: Dan Eddy, Emmett Guiette, Karen Provost and Gwynn Sadlier.

The contest winners were, for Closest to the Pin: Chuck Uyeda, Longest Drive: Melynie Schiel, Chipping Contest: Kenny Nicholas, and Putting Contest: Bob Georgiadi.

This year, players included actors Raymond Cruz, Michael Paul Chan, Phillip Keene and Geoffrey Rivas from the cast of the hit series "The Closer." Raymond, an award-winning actor with an impressive resume of both TV and movie roles, is a frequent visitor to the 29 Palms Inn. It was there he met Mario Villescas, Chair of the Foundation's Golf Committee. Raymond quickly agreed to bring a foursome to support the event, and to provide an auction prize. The prize, a chance for a twosome to play golf with Raymond and his friends, was auctioned off by CMC Superintendent/President, Dr. Roger Wagner, at the tournament's awards dinner.

Billy Joe Taylor, owner of Cutting Edge Grading, won the auction with a bid of $650, but wrote his check out for $1,000, much to the delight of Foundation Board President, Jane Smith. "We really appreciate it when people give a little extra to show how much they support what we do for education in the Morongo Basin."

The bidding was brisk, with at least one person taking bids over their cell phone. "It was fun having Raymond, Michael, Phillip and Geoffrey here to support our efforts," says Mario, "They really seemed to enjoy the course and our particular flavor of hospitality. Raymond and his friends made the event a bit more exciting, especially for people like Owen Gillick, who I believe has been to all 26 of our tournaments!"

Also playing in the event were the Commanding General's Chief of Staff, Col. John P. Holden, two teams of Marines sponsored by Libby's Realty and Day Construction, and four members of the 29 Palms High School Golf Team, sponsored by Advantage Towing. Other major sponsors included the 29 Palms Inn, Bistro 29, Hi-Desert Physical Rehabilitation Group, and Peak Roof Management. "Our sponsors are the key to our success," says Syndee Slayton, Executive Director of the Foundation. "Not only do they help fund the event, they also help us to reach into the community that we serve."

For more information on this event or how you can become involved with the CMC Foundation, please contact Syndee Slayton at 760.366.5296. You can also visit the Foundation online at www.thecmcf.org. For general information on Copper Mountain College visit www.cmccd.edu, or call 760.366.3791.

*Birds of Joshua Tree National Park*
April 30, May 1 & 2, 2010 - The deceptively barren Mojave Desert landscape is home and resting grounds for numerous endemic migratory bird species. Joshua trees do not make a typical forest, the landscape is open, the climate dry and vegetation relatively sparce. Despite this, over 240 species of birds have been recorded in Joshua Tree National Park! Kurt Leuschner, Associate Professor of College of the Desert, Palm Desert, will guide this three-day field class through the Mojave and Colorado Deserts to identify common and rare birds.
Leuschner's focus will be on identifying individual species and separating summer and winter residents from true migrants. He will discuss nesting and feeding habits, interactions with plant life, and adaptive strategies. Participants will have the thrill of identifying the park's common spring bird species, better understand the role each plays in the high desert ecosystem, and have the chance of sighting rare species like the Pinyon Jay, Prairie Falcon, or Lawrence's Goldfinch.
Sponsored by the Desert Institute at Joshua Tree National Park, this field seminar meets at the Black Rock Visitor Center, 9800 Black Rock Canyon, Yucca Valley, CA 92284 on Friday, April 30, 6 pm - 9 pm, Saturday, May 1, 7:30 am - 4:30 pm, and Sunday, May 2, 7 am - 12 pm.  *Morongo Basin Cultural Arts Council and The Twentynine Palms Art Gallery announce The 3rd Biannual Noah Purifoy Tribute Show 'Transformations 3'
 Through May 30, 2010; Reception: 12-3 p.m., Sunday, May 2

Noah Purifoy, internationally renowned assemblage sculptor, died on March 5, 2004 in an accident at his home in Joshua Tree, age 86. Noah Purifoy said he would like to be remembered as an artist who made art for the sake of change and strove to understand art and its role in the world. He always said: "I hope my work provides inspiration for a person to do today what they couldn't do yesterday, no matter what it is. That's art. That's the fundamental creative process and it's something that changes people and empowers them."

Purifoy co-founded and directed the Watts Towers Art Center in the 1960s. The fires of the Watts rebellion in August 1965 dramatically forged a new direction and heightened awareness. Purifoy along with artist/musician Judson Powell ventured into the riot- torn streets of Watts and collected charred wood and melted neon signs. Purifoy then recruited six other professional artists, consciously including whites, and created sixty-six separate works of art. The exhibition entitled "Sixty-six Signs of Neon" was both an ambassador for community arts and an eyewitness to an inflamed community's anger.

In 1976, then Governor Jerry Brown appointed Purifoy as a founding Member of the California Arts Council (CAC) where he served for eleven years. There he helped design, administer and fund Artists in the Schools, Artists in Communities and Artists in Social Institutions. The CAC was the first to adopt these innovative programs. They continue to serve as a role model for the rest of the country and remain funded today.

In 1987, Purifoy moved from the dense urban Los Angeles scene to the spacious rural community of Joshua Tree, California. He came to Joshua Tree primarily because he wanted to do an earth piece and could not find adequate space in Los Angeles. In the interim he started working on smaller pieces of outdoor sculpture. "The desert," Purifoy said, "permits you to build with the breadth and the width and the depth of the piece." With the desert as his studio, its big skies and flat empty spaces, Joshua Tree gave Purifoy the creative freedom to expand his repertoire by developing flexible, see-through forms along with sturdy architectural structures.

Noah Purifoy has filled 2 1/2 acres of the high desert in Joshua Tree with a sculpture garden that had synthesized the concerns of his life. Working freely with all kinds of materials and at every possible scale, he pushed himself and his work to create what many of us who have experienced his desert site feel needs to be preserved for posterity.

The Noah Purifoy Foundation preserves and maintains Purifoy's site for public appreciation and participation today. The foundation mission also seeks to promote public recognition and appreciation of the values Noah Purifoy's work has embodied over four decades as an artist and educator. The NPF is offering an original Noah Purifoy assemblage art piece to be on display in the May show at the Twentynine Palms Art Gallery. To learn more about the NPF and how you can help visit www.noahpurifoy.com.

The opening reception for 'Transformation 3' will be held on Sunday, May 2 from 12-3 PM in conjunction with the Arts Council's Spring 'Artist Gathering'. The event is a potluck and free for the public to attend. Please consider bringing a dish or dessert for the potluck table. Twentynine Palms Art Gallery, 74055 Cottonwood Drive, 29 Palms. 760-367-7819

Members of the Arts Council and the Twentyning Palms Artist Guild can submit a piece of assemblage art for the show. Work should be delivered to the Twentynine Palms Art Gallery on April 26th between 9 and 11:30am. There is no entry fee for members to participate. Assemblages submitted must be completed within the last 2 years and may not have been exhibited at previous Noah Purifoy Tribute Shows. Size not to exceed 36x36 and should be dry and ready to hang by wire only. Free standing work will also be accepted. For more information or to become a member contact the Arts Council at 760-366-2226 or info@mbcac.org.
